The Silent Extinction: Language Diversity as a Cognitive and Ecological Resource

Abstract
Of the approximately 7,168 languages currently spoken worldwide, nearly half are projected to disappear before the end of the twenty-first century. Language loss is commonly regarded as a cultural and communicative issue; however, it may also diminish unique cognitive strategies, ecological knowledge systems, and philosophical perspectives embedded within living speech communities. This study employs a narrative-integrative literature review synthesizing evidence from approximately 78 scholarly sources across cognitive neuroscience, ethnobiology, anthropology, computational linguistics, philosophy of language, and artificial intelligence. The review proposes two theoretical frameworks: Neurolinguistic Ecosystem Theory (NET), which conceptualizes the world’s languages as interconnected nodes within a distributed cognitive ecosystem, and the Linguistic Triage Protocol (LTP), a multidimensional framework for prioritizing language-conservation efforts beyond speaker population alone. Rather than claiming established causal relationships, NET is presented as a testable conceptual framework that generates hypotheses regarding the broader cognitive implications of language loss. The review further explores the relationship between linguistic diversity and artificial intelligence, arguing that greater representation of minority languages may contribute not only to cultural preservation but also to the development of more inclusive and linguistically robust AI systems. The paper concludes by outlining implications for language policy, community-led revitalization initiatives, and future empirical research aimed at evaluating the proposed theoretical frameworks.
