Linguistic Features of Women’s Language in Selected Interviews: An Analysis

This preliminary study aims to examine the linguistic features of the language of female television personalities across three levels of interview formality: formal, semi-formal, and informal. Using a qualitative research design with a case study design, six female participants were observed in the recorded interview between 2020-2025 and were analyzed through discourse analysis and thematic analysis. Difference Theory and Social Constructionist Theory served as the primary theoritical lens, while Politeness Theory and Accommodation Theory served as supporting theories. Two contrasting patterns were identified: (1) in informal settings, politeness decreased (98% → 12%), indirect statements decreased (87% → 34%), and avoidance of sensitive topics decreased (95% → 23%); and (2) in informal settings, code-switching increased (10% → 59%), emotional speech increased (5% → 45%), fillers increased (4% → 69%), and slang increased (1% → 37%). The study suggests that the language of the female participants is dynamic and contextualized, adapting to the level of formality, focused on rapport, narrative-based, authentic in emotion, and strategic in politeness. Lakoff’s (1975) proposition is redefined in the Filipino context: po, opo, and hedges are not markers of weakness but rather strategies for rapport and respect in Filipino culture. However, the study acknowledges its limitation, only six interviews of well-known television personalities were analyzed, so the findings cannot be generalized to all Filipino women. The patterns may be due to the mediatized context, media training, or public image, not merely gender.
