Language Attitudes of Grade Six Learners toward the Use of Meranaw in the Filipino Subject: A Case Study at Bubong Madanding Elementary School

This study examined the language attitudes of six Meranaw Grade 6 students. A qualitative design, particularly a case study approach, was employed to achieve an in-depth and contextualized understanding of the phenomenon. An FGD and a research instrument were utilized for data collection. The data were analyzed using the thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006), organized according to Baker’s (1992) three dimensions of language attitude, and examined through Ruiz’s (1984) three language orientations. The findings showed that the six participants held complex and multidimensional attitudes toward the use of Meranaw in Filipino classes. Their primary reasons for using the language were rooted in its naturalness and familiarity. A significant difference emerged in their ability to express themselves in the two languages: in Meranaw, their expressions were longer, clearer, more detailed, and more complete, whereas the use of pure Filipino often resulted in anxiety and limitations. The teacher’s translation of lessons into Meranaw served as an effective aid in understanding concepts in Filipino. However, excessive reliance on Meranaw resulted in limited Filipino vocabulary and language proficiency. It is emphasized that these findings are based on the context of a single school and cannot be claimed to represent all Meranaw children. The study concludes that the use of Meranaw within the context of Filipino classes cannot be regarded as a simple problem; rather, it is both a resource and a challenge that requires a balanced pedagogical approach. The findings provide an empirical basis for the development of inclusive and responsive strategies in teaching Filipino that recognize the first language as a pedagogical resource.
